On October 11, 1994, a bunch of us went to a little island called Isla Grande... Isla Grande, by the way, mean "big island." We did the Barbeque thing and the swimming thing and the sight seeing thing. We had a pretty cool time... though not without a few injuries.
![]() Our trip started with a bumpy car ride to the coast where we found ourselves a local water taxi to take us to the island. |
![]() We were greeted at the island by a couple of locals... well, local dogs, one of which was a pitbull that was nice enough at first... |
![]() But then developed a taste for human flesh... you know how that is. |
![]() "You gonna eat that?" |
![]() Reggie Williamson felt safer on top of a table after the pitbull, which we named "Cujo," decided to make a run through our picnic spot. |
![]() We went for a walk after lunch and found out where our taxi came from. |
![]() This is "El Christo Negro," The Black Christ, a local tourist attraction. There is also a nearby church with its own "Christo Negro." I'm not sure exactly why it's black. |
![]() "Y bien venidos a Cheers. ĄDonde esta Norm?" |
![]() Alright, you can call me a nerd for bringing a book to a picnic... okay it was a few books. Here's a friend of mine taking a look at a copy of The Book of Mormon that I brought with me. |
![]() This is the good life. |
![]() "My friends... A Toast!" |
![]() "Man, that beer goes right through ya... Good thing we're already in the water." (No, I'm not kidding.) |
We had a pretty good time that day. It's fun to go out with friends, swimming, picnicking and having a good time... But this day ended on a rather poignant note. When we got back to the mainland, there were about a dozen local kids waiting to help us with our things for whatever change we could spare.

We went ahead and handed them our bags and supplies. Then one of us suggested that we let them have a left over bag of chips. As soon as they heard that, they all reached for the bag. They tore it open, spilling it's contents on the ground... but they picked them up and ate them just the same.

It sure made me think. It made us all think. It made us wonder what their lives were like... Especially compared to ours.
