God Is Our Father
We worship God as the Almighty Ruler of heaven and earth. He is our Father in Heaven. We are his children. He loves us and wants us to achieve true, eternal happiness. He has prepared a plan to enable us to achieve this happiness. If we fulfill his plan, we will grow spiritually and live with him eternally.
We are the children of God: Genesis 1:26-27; Acts 17:29; Romans 8:16-17
The plan of God leads to happiness: John 15:10-11; 2 Nephi 2:25 (p.59);* Mosiah 2:41 (p.151)
Jesus Christ Is Our Savior
The sins that we all commit in this life could make us unworthy to dwell in the presence of God. But, because he loves us, our Heavenly Father sent his Son, Jesus Christ, to redeem us. Jesus voluntarily gave his life for our sins. Through his resurrection he overcame physical death so that we can live again. We can enjoy the blessings that come from Christ's sacrifice. To do so, we must accept him and live according to his example and his teachings.
No unclean thing can dwell in the presence of God: Romans 3:23; Ephesians 5:5; Alma 11:37 (p.236)
Through Christ's sacrifice, we can be cleansed of our sins: Alma 7:9-13 (p.224); Alma 22:13-14 (p.264); 3 Nephi 27:19 (p.459)
Through the resurrection we will live after death: 1 Corinthians 15:21-22; 2 Nephi 2:8 (p.57)
What is our duty? John 14:15, 21; 2 Nephi 31:10-21 (p.113); Helaman 14:13 (p.401)
God Reveals the Truth through Prophets
God has established a simple pattern for revealing his plan to his children. He chooses righteous men and reveals the truth to them. We call these men prophets. The prophets then teach others about the plan of God. God gives them authority to act in his name. When people hear the teachings of these men or read them in the scriptures, the Holy Ghost helps them know that the teachings are true.
God speaks through prophets: Exodus 33:11; Amos 3:7; 2 Nephi 11:2-3 (p.80)
Through the prophets the people learn the truth: Acts 10:38-48; Ephesians 4:11-14; Moroni 7:31-32 (p.523)
He chooses witnesses.
The prophets testify of Christ.
The Holy Ghost confirms truth.
We are invited to obey.
Joseph Smith: A Modern Witness of Christ
God has followed this pattern in our day by choosing a latter-day prophet. This prophet was Joseph Smith. In 1820 young Joseph Smith prayed to know which church he should join. In answer to his prayer, God the Father and Jesus Christ appeared to him. Through him they restored the truth about the plan of God. Joseph Smith was a prophet and a powerful witness of Christ.
The Book of Mormon: Another Testament of Jesus Christ
By the power of God, Joseph Smith translated the Book of Mormon. It contains the writings of ancient prophets who lived in the Americas. These ancient prophets testified of Jesus Christ and his mission. They taught the truths of Christ's gospel in great clarity and power.
The Book of Mormon is a powerful witness of Jesus Christ: 2 Nephi 25:26 (p.100); 2 Nephi 31:2-21 (p.113); 3 Nephi 10:18-19 (p.427)
Christ prophesied about the Book of Mormon peoples: John 10:16; 3 Nephi 15:16-24 (p. 437)
You Can Know the Truth
The Book of Mormon is also evidence that Joseph Smith was called by God to be a prophet and a witness of Jesus Christ. You can know that the Book of Mormon is the word of God. You can know that Joseph Smith was a true prophet. You can know these things by readings the Book of Mormon, pondering its message and its importance to you, and praying to know that it is true.
Through the Holy Ghost we can know the truth about spiritual things: John 14:26; 1 Corinthians 2:9-16; James 1:5-6; Moroni 10:3-5 (p.529)
What Can You Do to Know the Truth?
1. Read Moroni 10:3-5. If you will read, ponder, and pray sincerely about the Book of Mormon, the Holy Ghost will manifest to you that it is true.
2. Begin reading the Book of Mormon.
3. Compare Book of Mormon passages with the Bible. (The footnotes in the Book of Mormon will help you.)
4. Discuss what you have read with a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
5. Pray earnestly to know that the Book of Mormon is true. The four steps of prayer are-
1. "Our Father in heaven..."
2. "We thank thee..."
3. "We ask thee..."
4. "In the name of Jesus Christ, amen."
6. Attend worship services of the Church.
7. Take part in the second discussion with the missionaries.
